Hyaluronic Acid Joint Injections

At our Physiotherapy Centre, we are pleased to offer Hyaluronic Acid (HA) joint injections as an innovative treatment for various joint conditions, including arthritis. This treatment is particularly effective for the knee, hip, ankle, big toe, thumb, and shoulder.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring molecule within our bodies, primarily found in joint fluid. It plays an essential role in maintaining normal joint function, providing lubrication, and helping to absorb pressure within the joint. Think of HA as the hydraulic fluid in a car—essential for smooth operation and preventing wear and tear.

In cases of osteoarthritis and other joint conditions, the quantity and quality of HA can reduce, leading to discomfort and decreased mobility. This is where HA injections come into play.

How Do HA Injections Work?
HA injections are sometimes referred to as joint fluid replacement therapy or visco supplementation. These injections provide a consistent reduction in pain and promote progressive increases in functional ability. Our HA injections are synthetically produced in laboratories, mirroring the natural properties of HA found in our joints.

The unique viscoelastic properties of HA allow for better joint lubrication and assist with easy movement while helping to absorb shock. Furthermore, HA is thought to form a barrier against inflammatory processes—one of the leading contributors to joint pain in osteoarthritis patients.

Why Choose HA Injections?
One of the major advantages of HA treatment is the minimal side effects, making it a safer alternative compared to long-term use of anti-inflammatory medications or repeated steroid injections. As medical professionals become increasingly cautious about these traditional treatments, HA injections offer an effective and repeatable solution for managing joint conditions.

Accessibility & Cost
While HA injections are not always readily available through the NHS, they are comparatively affordable, especially considering the prospect of reduced pain and improved functionality in everyday activities.

Our specialist, Jim McDonald, administers these injections with expertise and care. If you're interested in learning more or scheduling a consultation, please drop us an email.

We also offer steroid injections, but please note that we do not prescribe these medications. Patients will need to obtain them through a prescription from their General Practitioner before we can administer them.
